Start with Alameda criminal case information, then request the document

Alameda Superior Court separates public criminal case information from the underlying criminal case documents. The court’s current pages conflict on Odyssey registration: its Court Records Request page says public criminal case-information access is free and does not require registration, while its Public Portals page says public access to Odyssey requires registration. Because those official instructions conflict, follow the live Odyssey sign-in or registration prompt when you open the portal. The Court Records Request page limits online criminal case information to cases with activity since 2005; public document access is a separate step.

Need to identify the case

Use Odyssey to confirm the defendant, docket/case number and current public case information.

Need a filed document

Use the court’s Criminal Record Requests process for a non-confidential complaint, order, judgment, disposition or other filing.

Need to inspect in person

The court also permits in-person review of non-confidential criminal case documents and provides public access terminals at specified locations.

Give the court enough information to locate the file

  • ✓
    Best identifier

Use the docket/case number whenever you have it.

  • ✓
    Alternate identifiers

The online request accepts the defendant’s first and last name plus either DOB and arrest date or DOB and conviction date when a case number is unavailable.

  • ✓
    Name the product

State the exact document needed instead of asking for an undefined “criminal record.”

  • ✓
    Keep the response

The portal can email confirmation, an itemized bill if located, or a notice that the court could not locate the record.

Use the special mail route for a signed, sealed immigration letter

If the required product is a letter with an actual signature and court seal for immigration purposes, Alameda says not to use the online Criminal Records Request portal. Mail the request to East County Hall of Justice, 5151 Gleason Drive, Dublin, CA 94568, Attn: Criminal Division.

The court lists $1 per letter, payable by check or money order drawn on a U.S. bank to Alameda Superior Court; do not send cash. Include the requestor’s mailing/contact information plus the defendant name, docket number and date of birth.

Interpret a blank search inside the portal’s scope

A blank Odyssey result does not prove that no Alameda criminal case exists. The court expressly limits the public online criminal case-information view to cases with activity since 2005. Older matters, records requiring staff retrieval, and non-public material need another access route.

Keep the search date, exact name, identifiers used and any court response. Do not substitute an arrest record or statewide criminal-history check when the task is to obtain a specific Alameda court record.
